History of the Milk Can Game

By Josh Thompson

Bragging rights, a trophy and a Mt. Baldy League victory will be on the line at 7 p.m. Friday at Chino High School.

For the 33rd straight year, the Chino and Don Lugo High School football teams will battle for the Milk Can trophy, given to the winner of the annual contest.

The winning school gets to keep the trophy for a year.

A full house of fans is expected.

Tickets went on sale last week at both high schools.

Cost is $7 for adults, $1 for Don Lugo High students with an ASB card and free for Chino High students with an ASB card.

Junior high and elementary school students tickets are $1 if they are accompanied by a paying adult and children under 6 are free with a paying adult.

Parking is $3 in the school’s general parking lots, $5 for VIP parking. Parking also is available on surrounding streets.

Chino has won 19 of the last 20 games, including a 15-7 win in last year’s contest.

Don Lugo last won in 2009, a victory that ended the Cowboys’ 18-game winning streak in the series.

This season, Don Lugo has a 2-2 record.

The Conquistadores, under first-year head coach Lou Randall, last played Sept. 13, winning 39-14 over Azusa at Citrus College in Glendora.

Chino High, under third-year head coach and 1990 Chino High graduate Matt McCain, entered Friday’s Mt. Baldy League opener against Ontario with a 2-2 record. The Cowboys shut out Pomona, 42-0, and Los Altos, 16-0, for their first two victories of the season.

Milk Can History

In 1980, Don Lugo High sports booster club member Marv Ecklund wanted to spark the rivalry between the Don Lugo and Chino high school football teams. That year, he decided to give a trophy to the winner for bragging rights.

Mr. Ecklund owned the actual Milk Can, which he had silver plated at a restoration shop in Pomona.

Starting in 1982, he carried the Milk Can Trophy from place to place for chroming, engraving and presentation.

For the first two years, the game was played in front of 6,000 fans at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga.

Then the game was moved to the stadium at Chino High, home to both Chino and Don Lugo football teams. One year the game was played at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Mr. Ecklund, who died March 4, 2007, after a short illness, was honored before that year’s game when a plaque bearing his name was unveiled on the trophy. He started working the “chain gang” at Don Lugo football games in 1981, and served from 1981-84.

Even after his three children—Rhonda, Debbie and Jeff¬—graduated from Don Lugo High School, he continued to work as a volunteer until 2007.
